Thor update

The vet called yesterday to give me the results from the blood work. Everything looked fine except for one thing. His Thyroid was slightly low, for a dog normal is somewhere between 1.0 and 4.0 but Thor's was 0.9. He said this could be the cause of his seizure, so we are going to put him on a suppliment to help boost his Thyroid numbers. So, he now must take a daily pill with his food. We are going to try him on it for 4-6 weeks then bring him back in for some follow-up tests.

In other news, I just heard about someone who tortured a puppy in Gautier, Mississippi. The waste of space did some horrible stuff. They used PVC glue on the eyes to glue them shut, all in the puppies mouth and teeth basically glueing its mouth shut, and the puppy had multiple fractures to its legs. They were not able to save this puppies life. It was probably a stupid, bored kid with nothing to do and no oversite by their parents. Or it could have been some worthless junkie high on some kind of crap. Hope they catch that idiot.

Well sue the President why don't you...

Well, thats what Senator Arlen Specter just might do. According to this MSN article, Senator Specter, whom I personally do not like because of past mongering, is preparing a Bill that would allow Congress to sue Bush in Federal court. While this is most interesting, you may be wondering why would a Republican sue another Republican (whom in this case is the president).

Well, it appears that Bush, whom over his entire presidency has only cast a veto once on legislation that hits his desk, has been doing something quite....odd. It comes down to something called 'signing statement'. It seems that he has issued "..at least 750 signing statements during his presidency". Further, according to the article "The American Bar Association estimated Bush has issued signing statements on more than 800 statutes, more than all other presidents combined."

I did not know what exactly a 'signing statement' was so, I thought I would consult wikipedia to help shed some light on this.
A signing statement is a written proclamation issued by the government executive power that accompanies the signing of a law passed by the government's legislature.

Historically their main use is for rhetorical or political proclamations. Presidents of the United States, however, have also used such statements to set forth how they intend the rest of the executive branch of the federal government to interpret and enforce the new law.

...

Generally any executive statement made with the signing of a law can be said to be a signing statement. Christopher Kelley, a political scientist who has analyzed signing statements, groups them into three categories:

  • Rhetorical, "this is a great law"
  • Political, "this law meets the need of our unions"
  • Constitutional, "I'm signing this law, but won't enforce section 2"

Bush's use of signing statements seems to be a way for him and his administration to continue to do what they want, when they want to do it when it pertains to certain things. Such as anything to do with the US being at war, terrorists, or immigration.

I firmly believe in checks and balances. The founding fathers did not want one branch of the government to have ultimate authority. This seems to basically give the president the final word on legislation in a way. While I am not one for lawyers and lawsuits, if anyone else can be sued then so can the president gosh darnit.

I'm not fluent in the legalese so I leave it to you guys to help me understand this if I have misinterpreted any of it wrong.

bloggidy blog...

Thursday night Gwar put on one heck of a show and rocked downtown Mobile at the Soul Kitchen. Good heavy metal, add in awesome costumes, and then throw in red and purple 'blood' spray and you have a recipe for an awesome party. Rock on Gwar!!!

Saturday I met up with the group to tour the Battleship Alabama. Little do many know that the Alabama is the only Battleship with fully restored turrents. Other battleships have them stripped out and bolted shut or filled with concrete, but the Alabama guns are fully restored. It took us 2.5hrs to tour the ship and it was getting so hot and hungrified that we decided to skip the planes and the USS Drum submarine to remedy that. Very good by the way.

I then came home and watched some History Channel passively while playing some Battlefield 1942 and Doom 3 (still haven't finished it).

Sunday, I was a lazy bum. Washed clothes and bedding. Played more Doom 3 and passively watched the History Channel. Then watched the 4400 and the Dead Zone.

I've been doing a little reading to familiarize myself with Linux so I don't feel like a total loser when I sit down in front of a machine running linux. I've been pushing to get some unused computers up and running Linux in the lab. Hopefully they can and will be utilized in the future.

Ok, I've been meaning to post some of the pics sooner...well sooner turned to later....then really later. But now later has turned to now. So I give you pictures.

This is the "Boom B*tches" cake that Kacey dreamt up for BJD in its traveling attire.

The "Boom B*tches" cake with the 'fuse'.Here are the tasty innard of the "Boom B*tches" cake. Notice the oozage of chocolatey goodness.
Here are some pictures of my Mosin Nagant rifle I got a while back. (Beware, I have not fully researched everything about this rifle but following is what I know thus far) Its a very versatile Russian rifle. Two major versions of the one I have exist (Different versions of the Mosin Nagant have been in production since the 1800s). Mine has the date 1942 stamped with the arrow insignia for which production site it came from. This one is merely a rifle with pop up long range sights. The other version is identical but with a scope for the snipers. It fires a 7.62 x 54R shell.

Now, for good measure I throw in this picture. I was awake early one morning when Kacey was leaving for work and she noticed that there were a number of turtles in the yard and two of them were 'makin' sweet love'. So like any good roommate, she told me to come outside and see. Sure enough, they were gettin' it on. Then a third turtle was observing the action. Well, she leaves and I go inside and get my camera, like any nature lover would do. By the time I get outside they are scattering so for posterity, I posed the two 'lovers'. But, I think I may have gotten them backwards...the female may be on top....but you get the idea anyway....SWEET TURTLE LOVE!!!!
Hope you enjoyed the pics

A late night...

Yesterday, I was kinda bored and I couldn't find something 'shiny' enough to keep my attention for too long. But that changed last night around 11:15 when I thought Thor was having a very aggressive fit of itching but what was really going on was a seizure. So, I comforted him while he spasmed then he finally came out of it but was quite odd. He was disoriented and acted as though he was blind with foam around his mouth. Over the next few minutes he slowly came around started to act normal.

He then layed down on the bed started to go to sleep again. But then around 11:45pm I noticed he was acting weird again near the edge of the bed about to jump off. So I picked him up again and he started to drool which turned into foam and he started seizing and spasming again. Again, I held him until it was all over. I repeated everything I did earlier and he was 'blinded' and disoriented again for a few minutes.

Ever since the second seizure he has been okay but obviously I have made an appointment with my vet at 3:00pm today. So, I am definitely going to the Gwar performance tonight but I don't know about the other events going on Saturday. They are kinda up in the air right now till I find out about Thor.

Quick post...

Just ran across an msn article about Kinky Friedman. It appears he is now polling second in the gubernatorial (I always laugh at that word) race. This is a new slogan to me, "I'm for the little fellers, not the Rockefellers!" If you know anyone in Texas, tell them to vote Kinky Friedman for Governor!

Here is the article for you.

Rest In Peace Bandit

*sorry about the delay but here is my post about bandit*

Bandit died this morning around 5:00AM. Kacey woke up be about 20 minutes later to tell me the sad news.

We came home yesterday evening and while she was giving Smokey his daily medication she checked on her and there was quite a bit of blood on her backside and legs. We tried to give keep her hydrated until we could take her to the vet this morning but she didn't quite make it. I should have checked on her yesterday when I left for school but I didn't. There was probably nothing I could have done but maybe I could have. But now she doesn't have to worry with it anymore.

Christmas with the ferrets.

Bandit and Smokey in their little 'castle'.

My 150th post on Independence Day...

Although its a joyous day, today is a depressing one to me. On a 'normal' 4th of July, I would try to be at home and make a trip out to my Aunt and Uncle's house where we would have homemade ice cream and steak. But not this year, today is sad because i'm still trying to get over the sudden death of my best friend. He is usually in charge of the grill while I kinda watched the ice cream. We would play some playstation2 games before and after.

In other news, STS-121 has finally commenced with the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery this afternoon. No significant foam loss was detected in early reviews of video. I was listening in on NASA TV online and one of the crew was recording the external tank after seperation and noticed what he said was 4-6' or 6-8' long piece of fabric floating away. This could be some of the insulation from the top of the shuttle, which is not tiled. I feel this will all be okay and look forward to the Shuttle's scheduled rendevous with the ISS and their successful return. God Bless.

In entertainment news, myself and Shanon from the ACM went to see Superman Returns last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Brandon Routh was excellent as the 'man of steel' but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) was quite lacking IMO. If you haven't seen it, go but beware its about 2.5hrs long.

*SPOILER ALERT - Pirates of the Caribbean 3*
Also, its been confirmed by Jerry Bruckheimer that Keith Richards will make a cameo role as the father of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) .

A joyous, humbling day...

Tomorrow will mark the 230th birthday for this great nation I call home. (BTW, there's been an excellent series on the History Channel about the revolution I would highly recommend.) It was a huge, blind leap by our founding fathers to lead us onto such an uncertain path. They were rising up against the mightiest army in the world at that time and secured our freedom.

Many things have happened since then changing the world sometimes for the better but sometimes for the worst. I was thinking, 'what would the founding fathers say about what is going on here in the USA today?' I tend to consider myself both and neither a conservative or a liberal. Politics has become so much about the party line than the good for the people they represent or America. It seems that the two parties must be polar oposites on many issues to distinguish themselves from that other party.

Midterm elections are coming up this year and we are seeing it in Congress. Legislation about immigration, flag burning and the list goes on and on. My friend Doug made a good point the other night. Like a magician, the congressmen are holding out their left hand and shaking it...pointing at it and making a big deal about 'look at THIS hand, its all shaky and causing me to look CRAZY'. While the right hand is in your pocket grabbing your wallet, cash, and anything else of value while your entranced by the 'shaky hand'.

You heard about immigration reform, you heard about the flag burning legislation but did you hear about them passing a pay increase for themselves? I really think proposing and passing a pay raise for yourself is a conflict of interest. If I could pass a pay raise for myself, what do you think I would do? They are 'supposed' to represent the interests of the people from their districts. I think we should decide on if they should get a raise. They already get conpensated for expenses such as travel and whatnot, then they want a raise on top of that. They haven't given the hard working people of America a cost of living raise in about 10 years (minimum wage).

I like President Bush much more than the other candidates two years ago. But some of the things the government is doing truely and deeply scare me. Its a well known fact we cannot 100% protect ourselves from another possible terror attack. They are infrindging upon civil liberty after civil liberty to try and protect us. Too many people are blindly saying, 'Oh, its going to protect us. Go right ahead' when they should be saying, 'Now wait a minute, what does all of this entail exactly?'

AT&T has amended their privacy policy to one that means you basically do not have any privacy in their eyes. They can and will give over all your data, such as who you have called, what websites you have visited, how long you were at that site, and what links you clicked on, in the blink of an eye to a government official. Why? I thought there was a thing called 'Due Process' that they had to follow but apparently this is not so anymore.

Even in a time of 'war' the President and Government Officials should have to abide by certain laws. This has been seen a few times during the years. I do like you George Bush, I really do, but there are a lot of things that I do not like about how your administration is going about things. It looks like Big Business and Big Oil is really got a strangle hold on our government from my point of view.

I hope it gets better without getting too much worse...

Tomorrow, I will do my usual celebration of the country getting older. Grill some meat, sit back and ponder what the founding fathers thought and imaginated for this fine countries future direction. I hope we have somewhat fulfilled it. But don't forget Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Hamilton, Adams, Henry and Paine among many others. Hopefully the History Channel will be showing some good stuff.
