More Leprechaun musings

Well, there is now a shirt being sold on CafePress (link) and a follow-up news segment which i hope to get a link to soon.

Also, for those of us who do not yet own a PDA but have lots of access to a computer and a network connection here is a lovely tool for us. Its called 30 Boxes and its a nice online personal calandar which is free. Check it out, i'm going to start using it until maybe i can afford a PDA.

ACM Banquet plannings are going decently. Ticket sales are going on and are not going as I would like to see them but I kinda guess it is to be expected.

BEST went extremely smooth. The rules were pretty straightforward this year and the competition arena wasn't as complicated as last time either. Skrubby pulled it off wonderfully and was quite funny on the mic. I really enjoyed the dubbing skrubby did to the preview to the next BEST competition, he really is one of a kind.

Sorry its so long between posts but everything is running together. I do have to take a moment and thank Big Joe Duke for more than helping me but rather building my Aibo stand. Power tools are cool....just don't lose a finger.

Lepreuhhhh what.....

Ok, if you didn't get the email check this link out. I was ranting about this on IM to Jeremy when it was airing but this is too much not to share with everyone...finally a reason to embrace my Cullman roots.....

Sorry

Sorry, its been so long since my last post but there was spring break and all that stuff. But, worst news last night. The SGA denied our budget request because it was too late (and I think they were out of money as well). So, we could be out up to $800 from the International Trade Center, which I must stress was NOT my nor Mark's (the VP) idea, this was done by the faculty advisors without any input from the ACM members and on with her own money as well. So, in a desperate attempt to still have a nice intimate dinner as in years past we are trying to get the Magnolia Ballroom over at the Brookley Center and have catering by Naman's. Even through all of this if you want to go to the banquet then you can contact me for tickets as soon as we get this all sorted out. Also, I will post it here for the ones who are just following this story.

Going back to the Corporate Sponsorship thing, it is starting to look like SSI may have snubbed us and our only sponsor is Elevator World Magazine....go figure.... But you can check out the progress of our new ACM website being developed by Jeremy here.

What is this small postcard size piece of mail?

WOW, its a recall notification! My truck has a recall, this is awesome I actually have a vehicle new enough to have a recall! So, my trucks speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke, or burn which could result in an underhood fire. Thats totally awesome, I still cannot get over the fact I got a recall notification. So, I can take it to any dealer and have the offending part replaced with a new one. Hrmm.... that will give me a chance to get some information about the new Mustangs and the Shelby Mustang....

Just got off the phone with a Ford Dealership and they have the parts and can service it in about 1.5hrs and they can get to it today. WOOOOOOO!!!

On another note, I have a motherboard, processors, and heat sinks for the new machine. All I need now is some ECC Registered DDR memory (which it requires), a case, and some hard drives and it will be in business.

Also, I would recommend the new 'no batteries, just shake' flashlights to everyone. While mom was down, we saw some of them and purchased a couple. Its really awesome, the box says something like, 'shake for 30 seconds and have light for 20 minutes'. I don't know how long it actually lasts but you shake it for a few seconds and the sucker works good. I imagine it would be excellent to have in case of extended power outages.

Febe...

Febe stands for Firefox Extension Backup Extension which I just stumbled across and I forsee it being quite handy. A problem I run into is whenever I have to reload windows is that its kinda difficult to get it back to the way I had it before the reload. I have been almost a year on this install and in a year you can make a lot of changes to stuff. The first thing I install after reloading an OS is Firefox but looking through all of the extensions out there to find what I had or something similar is quite tiresome. This is where Febe comes in. Febe will take the extensions you have installed and actually make them into an installable .xpi format file. So when you have to reinstall all you have to do is find where your .xpi is, install it and away you go in utter bliss. Also, a problem I have is that the extensions I have on my desktop do not match my notebook. I can now use this .xpi to have the browsers uniform across my notebook and desktop. Quite a handy little thing. Obligitory link here.

There are tons of extensions out there for things from autocopy, which automatically copies text which you highlight, to one that changes your proxy server every 60 seconds to be harder to pinpoint and a session saver which is the sole reason why a friend of mine uses Opera version 5 or so. If you want Firefox to do something it doesn't or you want it to do something different then most likely there is an extension out there to do just that. Check some of them out. If your not using Firefox then what are you waiting for? Its safe and secure, it runs extremely well and the number of popups are drastically reduced.

Its the best thing since god created Tomatoes ;)

Sweet, corporate sponsorship

Well, the ACM's plea for funding has fallen on sympathic ears. We received confirmation from Elevator World here in Mobile that they will be donating and we received another confirmation that SSI will donate $250 and send two representatives to the banquet. This is quite awesome. This really helps us with lowering ticket prices to the students and faculty somewhat. We are still waiting for our late budget request to come before the SGA for approval which would take care of location expenses. We already recieved approval for $500 co-sponsorship for food costs.

That reminds me, the ACM is having a bowling night at the place on Florida Street which I think is an AMF place. I think we have 5 lanes reserved from 8pm till 11pm. So, if you want to join us bring some cash and a friend or two and come out to bowl with us.

Moving on I woke up to the news that Dana Reeve, the wife of Christopher Reeve, died last night from lung cancer. Then yesterday I read that Kirby Puckett died after surgery for a stroke he had, they were 44 and 45 respectively. This is on top of a couple more deaths from celebrities and friends families. Its quite sad. Many of them I don't really know.

However, I do remember when I was a kid up in Cullman watching baseball and thinking if Kirby can do it so can I. Its quite amazing, he was 5' 8". Not tall at all but played with the heart of someone who was 6' 7". I was playing baseball and wanted a real wooden bat, in the little leagues and stuff they use aluminum bats but I wanted a wooden one because of the major leagues. The baseball bat I got was the Kirby Puckett signature edition from Louisville Slugger. I was very proud of that bat although it was too heavy for me to really swing but I kept at it until I could swing it and hit the ball. So the news of him dying was quite saddening to me.

I finally gave Thor a bath yesterday, which I have to admit was quite overdue. Once he got wet he was a bit smelly but he was really good during the bath and smells good now. He amuses me so much, I feel that if I didn't have him around I would be much more stressed out about stuff but he keeps me relaxed.

Matt and I met at Picklefish tonight for some $3 long island ice teas which were quite good. We talked and laughed about stuff. Watched the USA basketball team manhandle Western Kentucky to win the Sun Belt Conference championship and get a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Several cute women came in during the course of the night but, as always, I am unable to find a way to speak to them. I guess I need someone to help mentor me in the ways of mingling and conversing with people other than computer nerds. Not saying computer nerds are uncool by any means, we are the some of the coolest people you will ever know (except when certain people gets all geeky and obsessive about World of Warcraft). Anyway, I'm still feeling the al-kee-haul so I will end this post now.

Game night

Well, after hearing a couple people may not show up and others not showing up at at all, I seriously considered cancelling but words had been spread wide and I simply could not. Kc was off of work and a couple people had made special plans just to make it so I felt obligated to do it. It was quite a surprise that we had 16 people show up for a game that many had never heard of. Lots of fun was had by all attendees once we figured out why the server had a 10 player limit instead of 64. I'm glad we did it and maybe after we all recouperate from this experience we can have another one.

I was quite happy with my machine, after several consecutive games of Savage I check my processor temp and it was a chilly 83 degrees Farenheit. At something close to idle, the processor temp was 73 degrees Farenheit or 23 degrees Celcius for those European folks. While my case does have 11 case fans, its much, much quieter than Beast (Athlon XP machine) which really is still my primary desktop machine at home.

I think the biggest shame of the night was Adam's machine, a dual core Athlon64 machine with dual SLI x1300 video cards and 2GB of memory. While i'm quite certain the machine would have more than handled anything we could throw at it, he could not get it to detect the network and thus never actually played with us on his machine.

Maybe I should clean my room now...
